Solar and batteries

Home batteries in Los Angeles, with solar or on their own

A battery in the garage or on a side wall, wired to the lights and outlets you choose to keep running when the power goes out.

About an hour at your house, on a day you pick. Your price comes inside your plan.

What we handle for you

  • We pull the permit and book inspections.
  • We deal with LADWP or Edison for you.
  • We call you back the same business day.

What a battery does for you depends on who sends your electric bill. Your address tells us that on the first call, and it decides how we set yours up.

On Edison

Power costs the most from 4 to 9 PM on Edison's time-of-use rates, and the state's net billing rules credit the midday power you send back at less. So the battery stores the afternoon's power and runs the house through the evening. In an outage, it keeps the circuits you chose on.

On LADWP

LADWP sets its own terms for the power you send back, outside the state's net billing rules. Here a battery is mostly for outages, keeping the fridge and the circuits you pick running, so you decide on one with your project manager at the roof check.

In Burbank, Glendale or Pasadena the city runs the utility and sets the rules. We go through yours on the first call.

Signs a battery suits your house

  • The power goes out on your street, and you want the fridge and some lights to stay on
  • You're on Edison, and most of your power gets used after 4 PM
  • You work from home and need the internet up through an outage

A battery for an older system

We start with what you have: the inverter, and whether the system can take a battery as it's wired. Adding a battery usually means new paperwork with your utility, and we file and chase that the same way. If the company that installed your panels is gone, the system check comes first.

Your battery, step by step

  1. Roof check. Free and about an hour. For a battery, much of that hour is spent at your main panel, picking the spot for the battery and the circuits you want kept on.
  2. Plan and price. Within 3 business days. The plan shows where the battery goes and which circuits it carries.
  3. Permit. Filed within 2 business days of your signature. A battery goes through the city's review and inspection too.
  4. Install. The battery and its gateway go on the wall, and the circuits you picked are moved so the battery can carry them.
  5. Inspection and your utility. We meet the inspector at the house. The day the inspection passes, your utility's paperwork goes in, and we chase it until the utility answers.
  6. Switch-on. We show you how to see the battery's charge and what it's running.

Your price, inside your plan

The plan prices the battery for the circuits you picked at the roof check, and your project manager goes through it with you.

When it's in

The battery on the wall with the circuits you picked running through it, and the app set up on your phone before we leave.

We answer for the battery for as long as its maker covers it. Your plan gives the years for the model you choose.

What people ask about home batteries

Can a battery carry the whole house?

It can, but on most houses that takes more battery than an outage calls for. At the roof check you choose what stays on, and the plan shows what that takes.

What does a battery do for my bill without panels?

That depends on your rate plan, and your project manager walks you through it at the roof check.

Where does the battery go?

In the garage or on an outside wall, where the city's spacing rules allow and out of the way of the car. We mark the spot with you at the roof check.
